For Internet Explorer 7, the Answer May Lie with Us

At this week’s RSA Conference in San Francisco, Bill Gates announced that Internet Explorer 7 will be released this summer as a public beta for Windows XP SP2 a full year before Longhorn is due to be released. IE7 seems to be mainly marketed for security, but many in the design community—myself included—are hoping for a change that is much more important to the future of the World Wide Web: web standards...

Good read. Good points. I wanted to share. I want to see how good Microsoft is at actually adhering to the standards now. It has been a major issue of mine with their brower as I'm sure you all know.

Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Well, since I'm getting in to the world of CSS, this may be a good thing, although, then again, it won't be as much, well, fun. I will no longer be able to answer the IE-user question 'Your site is broken, what's up?' with. 'nothing, just IE doesn't display it properly, all the other browsers do'.
In every step I hear your sobbing
dare I break the shade with one caress?
dare I trespass to lift the veil
to touch the lips so soft and frail?

Hold the whirlwind, don't let it blow
I seemed to know the ghost in you

Microsoft have still not indicated what the aims of IE7 will be, so hoping for better CSS support / alpha transparancys in PNGs etc is probably going to be in vein :(

PNG transparency I doubt, they'll probably release their own alpha-transparency format, if they haven't already and I'm behind in MSFT News.

Standards-wise, I think they'll really do something about. Then, once they have more absolute control over the market again, they'll simply start adding features and implanting new stuff wrong.

Then again, PNG transparency worked on the last version of IE for Mac I believe.

What do you know, it looks like it does support png transparency.

It doesn't seem to like ActiveX very much though, or maybe that's just me? *shrugs*

That's because Microsoft were hit by some BS patent (the irony!). Check <a href="http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1943847,00.asp">this article</a> out for more details.
